Another name that passed me by first time around is CODE, an electronic band from the UK and not to be confused with the black metal group with the same name.

The band formed in the early 1990s and the experimental ambient techno and electro-industrial pop that they purveyed soon brought them to the attention of a number of influential movers in the music industry particularly the much loved and much missed John Peel. They released their debut, The Architect, in 1995 and, as far as I can discover, this was the last heard from the band until the band put out Ghost Ship in 2020 and, again, to critical acclaim.

There doesn’t appear to be a great deal available about the band other than it is made up by Andy Phillips, Graham Cupples, David Mitchell and Darren Till and it seems that Ghost Ship and this ‘new’ album, Continuum, are made up by old tracks from the ’90s being reworked songs from the debut or previously discarded works in progress. This actually makes it sound as though the record is made up of previously rejected material which is not the case as ‘older’ songs and ideas have been played around with and revamped to make a gorgeous electro soundscape that is truly thrilling and very emotive too.

The music is a dreamy, trippy mixture of Tim Bowness, early No-man, Depeche Mode, Public Service Broadcasting, Orbital and Underworld and is as eclectic as it sounds. It looks like the debut The Architect is no longer available, but this new release sees three tracks in remixed from that album with Atlantic, Bleak Moments and The Architect all sure to increase the clamour for The Architect to be made available again.

Continuum is being released in CD and digital form as a 40-minute 8-track album but there is also an expanded double vinyl version featuring a further 4-tracks for 20 extra minutes and this really is the version to go for as the 60-minute vinyl is a most excellent hours’ worth of outstanding electronic music that switches between laid back to up-tempo in a heartbeat as wave after wave of subtle synths bath you in a luxurious wash of mind enhancing sounds and beats.
