Two decades after their foundation and a whopping 15 years after their last studio album, German power-heavy metallers Dragonsfire announce the Rebirth Of The Beast on August 29th. Guitarist Matthias Bludau is the only original member left, with fellow guitar player Timo Rauscher also performing on the first two albums so far. Peter Schäfer (bass) and Dennis Ohler (vocals) joined in 2018 and the newest addition to the band is drummer Elias Bludau, joining last year.

Produced by Rolf Munkes (Crematory), the new album is indeed a rebirth for the band, with a new inspiration and fire burning in these eleven songs. The style of Dragonsfire is classic power-heavy, with a pinch of thrash in songs such as Speak Of War. However, they rarely deviate from the melodic power metal formula, reminiscent of their predecessors from the late nineties Mystic Prophecy, Wizard or Squealer. We Ride, Preacher, Don’t Live In Fear are solid tracks, even if they don’t offer anything new or extraordinary. Even the cover artwork is so cheesy, screaming “this is meat-and-potatoes heavy”, and Dragonsfire should be respected for their honesty.
It is good that Matthias has decided to go forward after the death of singer and bassist Torsten “Thassilo” Herbert, because Rebirth Of The Beast not only bears the torch of the band’s legacy, but offers quality songs, A Portal To Escape in particular sounding like something HammerFall would be proud to compose. Cider Victims is a song from 2018 and we already know the ridiculously-titled W.I.T.G.A.G.O.T.O.S. from two years ago. If euro-power is your preferred genre, you could do no wrong with the new Dragonsfire album.
