Josephine Oniyama is an English singer-songwriter raised in Manchester but now based in Liverpool with Kindred being her third full alum release. This follows on from A Smaller Version Of The Real Thing which came out in 2002 and Portrait which was released to some acclaim in 2012 so it’s been a 10-year wait for those desperate for the latest work from this lady with a simply beautiful voice.

Brought up in Hulme she has embraced the music of her West African heritage as well as soaking in the vibe of the Manchester music scene to give her a solid music base and a real melting pot full of European and African rhythms. She’s appeared on Later with Jools Holland, recorded with Travis and played at Glastonbury, T In The Park and Latitude so she has the songs, the voice and the talent to be a household name and, just maybe, Kindred could be the album to give the big break she deserves.

Kindred is one of those truly eclectic albums that covers pop, folk, jazz and soul with Oniyama delivering each song so meticulously and with such a passion and desire that you cannot help but succumb to a woman and album far more addictive than any siren song! I guess the closest artist to Josephine Oniyama is the imperious Joan Armatrading and a touch of Tracy Chapman too so she is walking in very big footsteps but most certainly she has the talent to leave a big mark in the music world.

Listen to the album and you will be impressed with a set of perfectly delivered jazz and soul infused tunes that will stay in your head for days.
