London’s heavy metallers Neuronspoiler have been around since 2009, with three full-length albums released so far. The band’s core is formed by the two founding members Dave Del Cid (guitars) and JR (vocals) joined after 2017 by the rhythm duo of Francesco Giorgianni and Loki, along with second guitarist Adam Breyer. The House Always Wins will be released independently by the band on February 28th, more than five years after their latest album.
Crazy Love immediately attracts attention with its catchy chorus and memorable melodic guitar lines, with this radio-friendly start continued by Witness – another great, quality melodic metal song. Spoils Of War is much darker and a little bit heavier, sounding unmistakably British in delivery and power. Same can be said about Crimson Tale, which carefully avoids euro-metal clichés, adding epicness and muscle to the main riffs and guitar harmonies. JR’s vocals are as good as ever, never cheesy, but commanding and powerful, while emotional and theatrical enough to add even more soul to these excellent songs.
There are also two power ballads in Barren Soil and Hundred Years and “sandwiched” between them is the album’s heaviest (and longest) track Ascend To Death. It raises the bar even higher with its Priest-inspired tempo and crushing guitar-work. Definitely the album’s centerpiece, this song shows all the band’s strengths within less than seven minutes.
New Thing is more uplifting in spirit, sound and message, the “oh-oh” singalongs and Maidenesque dual guitar harmonies inevitably putting a grin on my face. Self Afflicted once again shows a darker musical side, almost US power-thrash in delivery although with Neuronspoiler’s unmistakable touch and tasteful melody lines and guitar solos. Great stuff. The album finishes on a high note, with another melodic mini-epic, much like it started: with an amazing chorus to hum on long after Let The Sun ends, and once again some killer guitar harmonies by Dave and Adam.
The House Always Wins is a no-flaws, classic heavy metal album from the British school, which deserves your attention and support for the band. Satisfaction guaranteed.
8/10
