Nightrage is a most popular melodic death metal outfit that began life in Thessaloniki in Greece in 2000 being formed by the two guitarists Marios Iliopoulos and Gus G. The first output from the band was three demos which then led to the release of the debut album Sweet Vengeance in 2003 and after relocating to Gothenburg the band has now released several excellent albums with Abyss Rising being record number nine.

There have been many musicians come and go over the years including Gus G in 2006 to form Firewind which led to a stint with Ozzy Osbourne too with only Marios Iliopoulos remaining from the original line-up. The current formation is a relatively stable one with Iliopoulos combining his tremendous guitar skills with the mercurial Magnus Söderman with Francisco Escalona on bass and Dino George Stamoglou on drums being an elemental rhythm section with such power that they could quite easily destroy planets. Vocalist Ronnie Nyman has been with the band since 2013 and is a death metal singer that I can listen to and fully appreciate even though his vocals are dark and screaming but never guttural and always melodic and he could be the missing link between clean and dark vocals! The music is melodic but hard, heavy and truly penetrating with crunching riffs and searing guitars, but the underlying melody keeps it all in proportion and perspective.

Abyss Rising is the final part in the trilogy of albums that began with 2017’s The Venomous and continued with Wolf to Man which came out in 2019 with the new album basically being a lament to mankind about the treatment of the planet leading to a descent into Hell which is loosely based on Dante’s Inferno so, given the subject, this was hardly going to be a pleasant tea party with Nightrage increased the power and intensity to produce what is basically the soundtrack to Armageddon. Fast, furious and brutal, Abyss Rising could very well be the perfect Nightrage album as it so neatly encapsulates the band and its raison d’être.

This is a great place to discover this heavy and essential band if you are looking for a new, heavy and profound experience and if a regular fan, then this is everything that you would expect form Nightrage and then some!
