Seventh Crystal is a Swedish melodic hard rock band in the best traditions of Europe and I wonder just what the Scandinavian AOR/melodic scene would sound like today if Europe had never made it big, somewhat different I suspect!

The two full releases to date from Seventh Crystal show a slick and glossy hard melodic rock band with the debut being a little on the saccharine side but last year’s Wonderland was a stronger and rather heavier affair which was obviously the right direction for the band to go in and this new download only 5-track EP sees a continuation of this more direct approach. For sure, the melodic elements, tight harmonies and exemplary levels of musicianship remain but the newer material has a more direct, urgent approach that bodes well for the future of the band as they seek out their own unique and distinct sound.

The music is very much in the style of the classic, anthemic stadium rock bands of the 1980’s and will most definitely appeal to fans of Europe, Survivor, H.E.A.T., One Desire and Treat and has much to recommend with a classic vocal performance from Kristian Fyhr (Perpetual Etude, Ginevra) with some sublime harmonies as no less than four band members also contribute backing vocals which helps to give such a rich tone to the work and the twin guitarists keep the riffs fairly chugging along. Much of the material was written during the sessions for Wonderland and if they have more material like this in their locker then the third album should be a real treat.
