Shameless is a German based sleaze/Glam rock band that was initially formed back in 1989 by the bassist Alexx Michael and seems to have folded pretty quickly before being reformatted in 1998 and the band has subsequently released eight albums including this new one, So Good, You Should… It seems that Michael has friends in high places as he had help from Eric Singer (Kiss, Alice Cooper) in the band’s second configuration by introducing him to several excellent musicians to continue the Shameless story.
The latest album sees the new band plus guests with vocals from Charlotte Tybalt, Frankie Muriel and Stevie Rachelle plus special guest Jaret Reddick from Bowling For Soup, guitars from Dennis Post and a musician simply known as BC plus very special guests Bruce Kulick, Tracii Guns and Alex Kane. Bass is courtesy of Alexx Michael (of course) with drums from Tod T Burr & special guest Adam Hamilton.
The album was recorded under COVID restrictions with music recorded at 12 separate locations which must have been a logistical nightmare, but the album was finally put together and what a most pleasant Glam rock album it is too. It features two new band tracks with the remaining twleve songs being covers and features some quite surprising choices too with, for example, the Ritchie Cordell composed track I Think We’re Alone Now which has been covered many times but probably now forever associated in the UK with the Tiffany version from 1987 and even a version of ABBA’s Does Your Mother Know. Different for sure but they seem to have had a great time putting the album together and the conversations during which they chose which songs to record must have been a real laugh. Watch out too for Love Is Blind which is a previously unreleased version of a Gene Simmons song. Track of the album though has to be the Teenage Head song Ain’t Got No Sense which is done in true The Sweet style and even features a band introduction seemingly copied from Ballroom Blitz but then the version of Pretty In Pink does run it very close.
Shameless may be a glam/sleaze band and they like to rock hard too, but this album also seems to have a folk/roots theme too giving a real Americana flavour which may aid or hinder sales, not sure which but it’s going to be interesting to see how it goes.
