It is sometimes amazing just how many sub genres rock has spawned; perhaps it is part of the human psyche that everything needs to be labelled and assigned to a category. So, we now have horror punk which is a curious branch off the main rock highway which encompasses punk rock and heavy metal with lyrics and a specific look inspired by horror films and fiction with the specific rider that the more Gothic the better.
The Other is a German band from Köln or Cologne for us inhabitants of our small island with Haunted being their eighth album since they formed in 2002. The band takes musical influences from The Misfits and The Damned, lyrical influences from Edgar Allan Poe and a specific look from Tobe Hooper, Stephen King, George A Romero and Steampunk and blends them into something new, dangerous and thoroughly invigorating. The perform in English and German and it is, perhaps, the German sung tracks that seem more sinister and malevolent maybe due to the German tongue being slightly more harsh.
There is an element of tongue-in-cheek about the band but do not let this distract you from the music which is beautifully performed by a team of great musicians and the songs are crafted incredibly well. There is an element of aggression about their delivery but they maintain melodic sensibilities with a touch of a pop/rock sound too which calls to mind The Kaiser Chief’s and The Killers. They have been through numerous changes in personnel over the year and line-up for this album with the original members Rod Usher on vocals and Dr Caligari on drums with Pat Laveau and Ben Crowe on guitars and Aaron Torn on bass and what a tight and compact unit they make. They seem to delight in pseudonyms which are a theme from the very early days of the band and, like Alice Cooper, these new names and identities add an extra dimension and mystery to the proceedings. Expect tales of mystery and nightmare from a band experienced in bringing horror tales to life and a view of their videos show the more theatrical and therefore dark glamour that they revel in.
The Other is an intriguing band and one that wants to be bad and, paradoxically, is therefore good; check them out as they are quite brilliant!
