Vypera is another new hard rock band from Sweden and I’m now starting to believe that it must be something of a ‘rites of passage’ thing for a young Swedish male to join a band before he can attain manhood! Joking apart though, there is a hell of a lot of very high quality Swedish rock bands out there and the conveyor just keeps pumping them out.
Now we come to Vypera and it seems that the group began life in 2016 as a covers band called Madhouse but gradually they began writing their own songs which led to a new direction and change of band name. The band features Andreas Wallström with his perfect English delivery with a hint of the original Diamond Head singer Sean Harris about his delivery with Christoffer Thelin on guitar, Andreas Andersson on bass and Johan Pettersson on drums.
The music is very much old school hard rock with a sound based on the big metal bands of the 1980’s with elements of Diamond Head and Whitesnake featuring heavily. The songs are all concise, hard hitting metal delights with the band telling it story and then moving onto the next chapter and nothing overstays its welcome. Andreas Wallström commands proceedings and appears to be the glue that binds the band together with the guys around him on the verge of building up some pretty impressive reputations. The rhythm section of Andersson and Pettersson are cataclysmic with their power and ferocity over which Thelin lays down immense riffs and stunning lead breaks which will most certainly have you rocking alongside with your air guitar and reminds of a young and frenetic Michael Schenker.
The songs are all relatively short but typical hard rocking anthemic stadium rockers that bode well for the band’s future.
