Nevena is the self-titled debut release by the Serbian vocalist Nevena Djordjevic which sees her joining forces with the Swedish singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Michael Palace whom you may know for his Palace albums as well as many other guest roles. Michael Palace is a musician renowned for releasing smooth and gloriously melodic/AOR albums that recall the halcyon days of the 1980s but always with a contemporary edge.

Nevena Djordjevic may be a new name but you may have already heard her if you checked out First Bite, the recent album released by the Serbian band The Big Deal which is a thrilling female vocal led excellent heavy melodic rock outfit. Obviously, someone at the label picked up on her vocal talents and decided to pair her with Michael Palace and this easy listening melodic rock album is the results of their labours. Nevena is much more than a singer as she is also involved in the song writing process as well as playing piano and Serbian natives will also know of her diverse work in music theatre. She is obviously looking to enhance her reputation on the international stage too which led her to enrolling at the influential Berklee College of Music in Boston where she continued to raise her profile and continue her musical development.

The music is very radio friendly with all the hooks and melodic touches expected from AOR with Palace offering up some great riffs and fabulous solos with Nevena’s crystal voice and warm, friendly delivery drawing you into the performance. The music is actually on the pop rock side of AOR and I could not help but compare her to the feisty Canadian Avril Lavigne which, to me, is praise indeed.
