My favorite Spanish band is here once again with a new album, Voyeur, released on March 28th, through Unsilent Tombs Records. Three years after the excellent Witches’ Domain, keeping a steady line-up, the Andalusians offer another slab of pure old school heavy metal, with a strong NWOBHM flavor. Eight new tracks in just over 40 minutes mean that nothing is in excess, everything here is condensed in the most satisfactory way.

Witchtower are true to the style they perfected on the previous album, an amalgam of Angel Witch and Satan influences, with very strong riffs, vocals and memorable melodies. While we still have the trademark galloping tempos of No Chance and Dr. Knife (with song structures that border on self-plagiarism from older albums, cough, cough), what I am hearing in the new album are some more progressive touches here and there, adding colour and depth in songs like the title track, The Gallows and the absolute classic Sherry Lee. When Witchtower dare to think more outside the box and don’t rely on tried formulas, as is the case with these songs just mentioned, the reward for the listener is so much greater. I have said it before and I will say it once more – this is a band with so much potential. The solos of Antonio and Victor are once again fantastic, really musical and elaborated, raising the bar really high in each of the songs.
While I enjoyed Voyeur a lot and I can confidently say the band once again lived up to expectations, there is still a feeling that they are capable of so much more. Perhaps one or two extra songs with the quality of Sherry Lee would have cemented a 10 out of 10 mark, but you know what – it’s not at all bad to know (because I know it for sure) that the best is yet to come, is it?
8,5/10
